Via Skype: Yaacov Hecht (Israel), Jesper Juul (Denmark), Helle Jensen (Denmark)
Helle Jensen wrote the book Vom Gehorsam zur Verantwortung. Für eine neue Erziehungskultur (From obedience to self-responsibility. For a new learning culture) together with Jesper Juul, and the book Dialog mit Eltern (Dialogue with parents) written together with Elsebeth Jensen. Jesper and Helle are also both on the film "The Ninth Intelligence – Intelligence of the Heart" (as practiced in a Danish School", www.filmkompagniet.dk).
At the conference Helle will talk about: Empathy – what binds the World together
”The best learning environment is created by teachers who are tolerant, respectful, interested and empathic to each child in the classroom” (From a Danish study making a review of 220 studies of different factors of importance for the learning environment).
So how to meet children with empathy, presence and awareness? In order to enhance these qualities in the children, but also in the teacher, in order to be able to stay a healthy, giving and creative teacher?
Together with other people who share the interest in giving these values a better place in our society we have created a programme for teachers and children. Here we help the professionals working with children to strengthen their relational competence and their contact with their own inner strength, their presence, awareness and empathy.

Margaret Giroux has been learning since she was in the womb. She is currently interested in how 'knowledge' is defined, the importance of being able to work cross culturally, and how the industrial model of education is so ingrained in our subconsciousness that change is difficult. In her free time, she is interested in being in nature and picking up interesting rocks.
Kia ora, my name is Tania Corbett. I am of mixed descent and have an appreciation for the diversity of cultures as well as a strong affiliation with my Maori heritage. My background is in education with over 20 years experience teaching in both primary and secondary schools, and in Maori educational settings including bilingual & Maori immersion. I now work predominantly in Hauora – holistic health support services within a Kaupapa Maori setting, and am privileged to be based at our local marae, helping to nurture whanau towards improved wellbeing.
The concept of Ako-a-Rongo, holistic learning, is something I am very passionate about as I believe that all people, young & old, should be encouraged and empowered to exchange knowledge & skills in a reciprocal, respective and natural way.
I look forward to the first Ako-a-Rongo conference to be hosted here in Te Tau Ihu o te Waka, the Top of the South Island, and the opportunity to learn from others as well as share with those interested aspects of Te Ao Maori, a Maori world view.
Nau te rourou, naku te rourou, ka ora ai tatou katoa.
With your food basket, and my food basket, we shall all be well.

Silke Chandragita - The Enneagram, FamilyLab, NLP, and various spiritual traditions have inspired my way of being with my three sons (6, 13 and 15). The four of us travelled the world for a year in 2008 before settling in Nelson. Professionally, I started out as an engineer and manager. Now I teach the Enneagram, facilitate the FlowGame, guide a meditation centre, co-lead the kiwi part of FamilyLab, coach and give massages. I am a certified Enneagram & NLP Trainer, founder of Enneagram Centre of New Zealand and Osho Advaita meditation centre. I am initiated in a wide variety of healing methods. What I will offer during the conference:
FamilyLab (together with Dean Sutherland – in preparation to the session with JESPER JUUL)
The love we feel for our children and our partners have no value until it is converted into loving behaviour. FamilyLab is all about making good families better. Facilitated in a thought-provoking manner with a series of challenging statements this workshop will take us through four core values of family relationships: Equal Dignity, Integrity, Authenticity, and Self-Responsibility. The workshop will be filled with real life stories, which are highly inspirational and relate directly to your personal life. The workshop will be presented by Dean Sutherland and Silke Chandragita, directors of FamilyLab NZ. Kundalini Meditation : An active meditation for the end of the day to shed any tensions and relax into awareness. The meditation includes 4 stages, all with inner awareness: shaking, dancing, sitting and laying. (1 hr)
Gibberish Meditation: An active meditation to let go of all the mind chatter and reasoning and become more centred in the HereNow. During the first part everyone utters random words and sounds. Second part is in silence with attention inward. (1hr or less)
Enneagram : The psychological model “The Enneagram” describes specific traits, values, strengths, weaknesses etc. for nine personality types. In a learning context the Enneagram can for instance be applied to enhance motivation, to resolve conflicts, to improve communication and to support the growth of a child. The Enneagram is equally valuable as a tool for family life, among colleagues or for personal growth and spiritual transformation. The model is simple to learn, so that you can start applying it immediately and yet holds a wisdom that is still being uncovered. In this workshop I will give a brief introduction to the Enneagram with examples of how it can be used in a teaching/learning situation.
NLP: Words are powerful. The psychological model NLP assumes that we all have our own model of the world. The words we use reveal our model. Children are still in the process of creating their model, and the words we use to communicate with them help them do that. By being aware of our own model and what we say, we can support the children in creating a beneficial model. In the workshop we will discover ways of exploring “others´ models” and we will talk about the difference between "You are naughty" and "you behave in a naughty way". Focus will be on "mouths on" exercises.
FlowGame: Do you hold any questions for which the answer eludes you? Do you have a goal, but just don´t know the way forward? Do you experience a conflict without an easy solution? In any of those situations the FlowGame is one possible way forward. It is a simple board game, and it is easy to start "playing" and get answers. At the conference, I´d like to invite you to come and play with any kind of burning questions you may have so that you can experience firsthand how the FlowGame can be applied.

Katerina Seligman, M.Sc.,
Dip.Ed., Psychodrama Trainer Educator and Practioner (ANZPA)
To assist another person in a learning journey, whether they be adult or child, we need to have a well developed ability to tune into the experience of the other person and, in a non-intrusive way, be present with them in such a way that the learner is validated and stimulated to find and follow their own inner genius. In the modality of psychodrama this is called doubling. To be a good double is an ability that is often lacking or underdeveloped. In the session “Tuning in to the Learner” I will share the developmental theory of Jacob Moreno, the founder of psychodrama, and we will explore own experiences of doubling and being doubled, with the goal of becoming better companions to others in their leaning journeys.
Katerina has been working with individuals and groups for over 35 years, using the psychodrama method. She is a founding member of the parent co-operative Mountain Valley School, which operated for 25 years near Motueka and has a lifelong interest in innovative, holistic education.

Konstanze Friedrich-Palzer - I don't consider myself an educator. I am a mother, a rather persistent mother of 2 dyslexic children (out of 5). I am familiar with the book-title: 'You are your child's first Teacher'. What about: 'Our Children are our Teachers'? Knowing that my children are intelligent, I have been searching for the reason for their 'learning disability'. On this journey the expression 'teaching disability' started to hover over me. I have since changed it to 'Lack of Information' about the roots of dyslexia. Training in the most widely used dyslexia correction programme in the world (in over 45 countries and more than 30 languages), has opened my eyes, answered my questions and gave me insight into the world of THINKING – the reason for the difficulties as well as an enormous talent.
What I'd like to present: THERE IS WAY MORE BEHIND DYSLEXIA THAN A LEARNING DIFFICULTY
Get an understanding of the roots of dyslexia and explore with me the deeper meaning of the talent /ability behind it. (talk/presentation about 1 – 1 ½ h)
USING THE TALENT TO OVERCOME THE DIFFICULTIES
A hands-on workshop (limited to 8 participants who preferably have heard the presentation)
Learning to gain confidence with the written language through creativity in action. An eye-opening fun-experience with modeling clay. (2 h)
This method has been tested in pilot-schools: None of the children passed class 3 needed any reading/writing support!

Verena Gruner immigrated to New Zealand from Germany in 1981, and is currently living in Riverside Community. She is a founding member of Mountain Valley School, a small private parent-cooperative primary democratic school, and has been involved in democratic education for more than 30 years. She has an ongoing commitment to the development of holistic education, nationally and internationally, and is part of Ako-a-Rongo.
Verena will offer two Bezavta workshops and one presentation on Democratic Education.
Bezavta (a Hebrew word meaning "Together") is a concept that was originally developed by the Adam Institute for Democracy and Peace in Jerusalem, Israel. The concept has been adapted to provide experiential education for children, young people and adults enabling them to experience and reflect on democracy and democratic principles. The Bezavta exercises will allow participants to gain deep insights into the conditioning of their attitudes and behaviours and learn about their impact on situations of everyday life. Verena learned this method from her sister Dorothea Schütze who is an education consultant and certified Bezavta trainer from Germany.

Birgit Baader, journalist and author, has been part of a research group of the Ministry of Education in Germany for 8 years exploring “alternative learning concepts” in order to enhance “Schulzufriedenheit” (satisfaction in school for teachers, students, parents) and learning motivation. She has written numerous articles and reports about the free-learning movement in Europe, and about the motifs behind homeschooling and unschooling and other alternative educational options. She is part of Ako-a-rongo, a group promoting holistic balanced learning options for all. Birgit is particularly interested in promoting interspecies communication, ESP (extrasensory perception), visualization and shamanic techniques, and, in general, in supporting humans to nurture and develop interconnective skills in order to find balance in life by re-integrating into a “bigger whole”.

Open Space
Inspiration Board
Please note: As mentioned before, an Open Space conference allows for things to flow freely. There is no such thing as a rigid, scheduled programme. However, due to organizational needs, we will have some “sessions” at a scheduled time: Skype sessions with Jesper Juul, Yaacov Hecht, Helle Jensen, Ben Smythe and the session with Ally Bull.
The following topics and ideas are a guideline, a suggestion for all to be inspired.
Things might happen in a COMPLETELY different way.
Here are some ideas that participants already offered to share.
Be Inspired! And if you feel like it, please bring your own.
