Research Study in Puerto Rico
Tania Corbett
The sharing of knowledge & skills and networking amongst various sectors of the community are fundamental elements of a growing worldwide movement and concept called Education City. In short: Every citizen is encouraged to develop their own area of strength and is therefore a student. Every person who shares their area of strength with others is therefore a teacher. The entire city, in this respect, becomes an educational institution of people learning from and teaching each other. Schools utilise the resources and resource people within the community and visa versa, stronger connections are created between people of all ages and sectors, and a more cohesive, resilient community is the result.
Caguas, in Puerto Rico, has recently become an education city. In March 2012, Caguas hosted the 20th annual International Democratic Educational Conference (IDEC), with over 900 participants from 30 countries. Ako-a-Rongo has hosted IDEC 2015 in Nelson, New Zealand. Tania Corbett has spent 3 months in Caguas as an education sabbatical, sharing her strength in teaching whilst learning how a community transforms itself into a network of collaborative learners. This is all part of the overall plan to establish a similar concept in the Tasman region, which could be a model for the whole of Aotearoa. We have been in discussions already with the mayor of Nelson, NCC strategic advisors, members of the Vision Motueka group & school educationalists regarding implementing education city concepts locally.
